Contacts
Keep the people you write to in the webmail — add, edit and group contacts, import and export vCard files, people saved automatically when you email them, and syncing contacts to your phone and computer.
Your contacts live with your mailbox, on our mail server, in standard address books. The webmail shows them, and your phone and computer can sync them too (see Sync with your phone and computer). Each mailbox has its own contacts.
Open your contacts
Choose Contacts in the webmail sidebar, under your folders. On a phone, open the sidebar with the button at the top left first.
- Contacts are listed A to Z. Type in Search contacts to find someone by name, address, company or phone number.
- The buttons above the list show All, My contacts, Other contacts, or the people with one label.
- Choose a contact to see their addresses, phone numbers, company, birthday, labels and notes. Choose an address (or Send email) to write to them. On a phone the contact replaces the list; the back arrow returns to it.
Add and edit contacts
- Choose the New contact button (a person with a plus) above the list.
- Fill in what you know: first and last name, company, up to ten email addresses and phone numbers, a birthday (the year is optional), labels and notes. A contact needs at least a name, an address or a phone number. Each mailbox can keep up to 5,000 contacts.
- Choose Save.
To change a contact, open it and choose the pencil. To delete it, choose the bin and confirm — this removes it from every device that syncs your contacts, and can't be undone.
You can also add someone straight from your mail: Add to contacts appears beside a sender's address when you read their message, and the small person button on an address you're writing to adds that address.
Labels group people (for example family or book club). Type them separated by commas; each label gets its own
button above the list.
People you email are saved automatically
When you send a message, anyone you wrote to who isn't in your contacts yet is added to Other contacts, with the name the message used, a few seconds later once the message has really gone (if you choose Undo, nobody is saved). Nobody already in your contacts is changed. This keeps their addresses in the suggestions when you write, without filling My contacts.
- To keep someone, open them and choose Move to My contacts in the ⋯ menu.
- To remove someone, delete them as usual.
- To stop saving people automatically, open the ⋯ menu above the contact list and turn off Automatically save people I email. It's on unless you turn it off, and the setting is per mailbox.
Select several
Pause over the initials beside a contact and tick the box (or tick several). The bar that appears can move them to My contacts or Other contacts, export them, or delete them (after a confirmation).
Import and export
- Import: in the ⋯ menu above the list, choose Import contacts (.vcf) and pick a vCard file exported from another app or service. Files can be up to 1 MB and 1,000 contacts. We read names, email addresses, phone numbers, company, birthday, labels and notes; photos and links in the file are ignored. Contacts without a name, address or phone number are skipped, and the notice tells you how many.
- Export: choose Export all contacts in the same menu, or select some contacts and choose the download
button, to get a
.vcffile you can import anywhere.
Sync with your phone and computer
Your contacts use CardDAV, the standard most phones and desktop apps understand, so changes on one device show up on the others.
You'll need:
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Server | imap.anhourmail.com |
| Username | Your full email address |
| Password | An app password with "Contacts and calendars" ticked |
| URL | https://imap.anhourmail.com/dav/card/ followed by your email address, if the app asks |
- iPhone and iPad: Settings → Contacts → Accounts → Add Account → Other → Add CardDAV Account. Enter the server, your email address and the app password.
- Mac: Contacts → Settings → Accounts → + → Other Contacts Account → CardDAV, with the same values.
- Android: Android needs a free CardDAV sync app (for example DAVx⁵ from F-Droid or Google Play). Add an account with "Login with URL and user name", using the server above as the URL.
- Thunderbird: Address Book → New Address Book → CardDAV Address Book, and enter your email address and the server; Thunderbird finds the address books itself.
Your address books show up as your mailbox's address book (shown as My contacts in the webmail) and Other contacts.
Use an app password
Like mail apps, contact apps sign in with an app password, never your account password. If you lose a device, revoke its app password and nothing else changes.
Webmail
Read and write mail in the browser — signing in, several mailboxes, writing and undoing a send, organising, searching, shortcuts, and why remote images are blocked. Contacts have their own guide.
Webmail settings
Make the webmail look and behave the way you like — theme, density and reading pane, signatures, automatic replies, forwarding, blocked and safe senders, your name, dates and keyboard shortcuts.
